Rovinj has more good restaurants per square metre than almost anywhere else on the Adriatic, and after years of hosting guests here — and eating out ourselves more nights than we can count — we’ve settled on the places we actually recommend, not just the ones that look good online. This list runs in the order we’d tell a friend: our own everyday favourites first, then Rovinj’s Michelin-starred tables for when you want to make a real occasion of it.

Our Own Favourites

Rovinj’s food scene blends fresh local ingredients with Mediterranean and Italian influences, and these are the places we keep coming back to ourselves.

1. Artičoka — Our Favourite

Artičoka is the one we’d pick if we could only recommend a single restaurant in town. It’s a small, creative spot built around seasonal ingredients and modern interpretations of local cuisine — nothing overworked, just careful, seasonal cooking done well. View on Google Maps

2. Adriatic Brasserie — Refined Dining on the Main Square

Set inside Hotel Adriatic, right on Rovinj’s main square, this stylish waterfront brasserie blends French-inspired cooking with Mediterranean flavours. It suits a long breakfast, a working lunch, or dinner by the harbour equally well, with a more polished, hotel-restaurant atmosphere than most of the Old Town’s tucked-away spots. 3. Bookeria — Relaxed Bistro, Mediterranean and International

Bookeria is a vibrant, easygoing bistro mixing Mediterranean staples with international dishes in a relaxed atmosphere — a good choice on nights when you want something a little different from classic Istrian cooking without leaving the Old Town. View on Google Maps

4. Marina — Family-Run on the Promenade Since 1967

Marina holds a special place for us: it’s the restaurant Eleni’s grandfather opened on Rovinj’s riva, and it’s still run by the family today, nearly sixty years later. It’s a classic seaside restaurant with beautiful views, known for fish and seafood done simply and well, and for the kind of tradition and consistency that comes from staying in one family’s hands for six decades. If you want to taste a small piece of our own history while you’re here, this is it. View on Google Maps

5. Fish House — Casual, Fresh Seafood

When you want good seafood without the full sit-down occasion, Fish House is a simple, popular spot for quick, fresh seafood bites in a modern street-food style — easy to grab between a swim and an evening walk. View on Google Maps

6. Rio — A Long-Standing Local Favourite

Rio has been a fixture for locals as much as visitors, known for its friendly atmosphere and traditional dishes done consistently well. It’s the kind of place you end up returning to more than once during a longer stay. View on Google Maps

7. Augusto — Coffee & Tea in the Old Town

For a slower morning or an afternoon break, Augusto is a charming, peaceful spot in the Old Town for coffee or tea — one of our go-to recommendations for guests who want a quiet pause between sightseeing. View on Google Maps

8. Ombra — The Best Gelato in Town

No visit to Rovinj is complete without gelato, and Ombra is one of the best spots in town for it — proper artisanal gelato, worth the short queue in July. View on Google Maps

For a genuinely exceptional dining experience, Rovinj is one of the rare destinations of its size with multiple Michelin-starred restaurants — a remarkable concentration of fine dining for such a small town.

9. Agli Amici Rovinj — Croatia’s Only Two-Michelin-Star Restaurant

Agli Amici Rovinj holds two Michelin stars, the only restaurant in Croatia to do so, offering refined tasting menus and a genuinely top-level fine dining experience. This is the choice for a truly special occasion.

10. Monte — Croatia’s First Michelin-Starred Table

Monte, tucked into a converted old-town house below St. Euphemia’s bell tower, was the first restaurant in Croatia to earn a Michelin star, and it remains one of the most serious kitchens on the coast — an intimate room and consistently creative tasting menus built around Istrian ingredients.

11. Cap Aureo Signature Restaurant — One Michelin Star, Modern Istrian Cuisine

Cap Aureo Signature Restaurant rounds out Rovinj’s Michelin trio, awarded one star for its modern, seasonal approach to Istrian ingredients. We highly recommend booking well in advance for all three, especially through the summer season.

What We’d Actually Recommend

If we had to plan it ourselves: start with Artičoka or Marina for an easy, honest dinner, keep Bookeria, Rio, and Adriatic Brasserie in rotation for the rest of the week, treat Augusto and Ombra as daily rituals rather than one-offs, and save one evening — just one — for Monte, Agli Amici Rovinj, or Cap Aureo. That mix of everyday favourites and one unforgettable table is, honestly, how we eat in this town ourselves.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dining in Rovinj

What is the best restaurant in Rovinj? It depends what you’re after. For an easy everyday favourite, we’d point you to Artičoka. For history and seafood on the water, Marina, family-run since 1967. For a special occasion, Rovinj’s three Michelin-starred restaurants — Agli Amici Rovinj, Monte, and Cap Aureo Signature Restaurant — are hard to beat. Does Rovinj have Michelin-starred restaurants? Yes — remarkably, for a town this size, Rovinj has three: Agli Amici Rovinj (two stars, the only restaurant in Croatia with two), Monte (Croatia’s first Michelin-starred restaurant), and Cap Aureo Signature Restaurant (one star). Is Marina restaurant still open? Yes. Marina has been family-run on Rovinj’s promenade since 1967 — it happens to be the restaurant Eleni’s grandfather opened, and her family still runs it today. Where can I get good gelato or coffee in Rovinj? Ombra is one of the best spots in town for artisanal gelato, and Augusto is our pick for a quiet coffee or tea break in the Old Town. Do I need to book restaurants in advance in Rovinj? Yes, especially in July and August and for the Michelin-starred restaurants, which can be fully booked days in advance. Casual spots like Fish House, Bookeria, and Rio are more flexible, but a same-day reservation is still a good idea in peak season.
